BBFC Guideline

When researching what certificate our film should be we had a bit of a dilemma as some of us thought 15 would be suitable but others thought that some scenes might be too strong. After visiting the BBFC website we could still not come to a conclusion so we decided to ask our teacher for advice and he thought that 15 would be suitable.

The reason why we thought that this would be appropriate is because when making our film our target audience was aimed to 18-25 years old and not that we have read the BBFC 15 guideline we have come to the conclusion that our film is also suitable for 15 year-olds which broadens our target audience and this is good for our company.

GUIDELINES FOR A 15 PRODUCTION

Discrimination – Our production does not include any discrimination
The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

Drugs – Our production does not include any use or misuse of drugs
Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror – Our production includes a moderate amount of horror
Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

Imitable behaviour – Our production does not include any imitable behavior
Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language- Our production includes a moderate use of strong language but not frequent
There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity- There is a moderate use of nudity in our production
Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex- There is some sexual activity in our production but with NO strong detail
Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme
No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Violence- There is a considerate use of violence in our production
Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.
